Fake firms are increasingly posing as “timeshare claims” specialists and targeting owners who are trying to get help.
Timeshare claims are now a more complicated space to navigate.
With a high volume of successful cases passing through the Spanish courts, some timeshare resorts are using manipulative tactics to discredit legitimate consumer representatives — the firms working to help owners exit agreements that were mis-sold to them.
Many worried consumers search online for answers, only to be met with a flood of statements, websites and articles that contain misleading or outright false information.
There are also influential so-called “help” sites that claim to guide consumers in separating reputable providers from a timeshare claims company scam. However, digging into the background of some of these websites can reveal a very different picture. One example is www.kwikchex.com. It is funded by the timeshare industry, blocks reports of wrongdoing by resorts, and targets companies representing consumers seeking compensation and the annulment of their timeshare contract. One of the largest organisations under threat is European Consumer Claims (ECC), which has referred nearly 2,000 claimants to lawyers in Spain and the UK.
It’s no surprise many consumers no longer know who to trust — and why people are actively looking for timeshare exit scam warning signs before they make contact with any provider.
M1 Legal were mentioned in a story in The Times earlier this year for instigating a case for mis-selling. The article highlighted the problems experienced by clients of M1 Legal and also mentioned that the football stars Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs had a commercial interest in this particular resort.
